SOUTH BEND, IN – Benedictine University men’s and women’s cross-country teams competed at the National Catholic Invitational this past Friday.
The event was held by the University of Notre Dame with 23 teams participating from all over the country. Teams included Notre Dame, Dayton and Crieghton.
The men’s cross-country team sent seven runners with sophomore Marcos Garcia finishing 23rd overall out of 160 competitors. Through the other contributions, the Eagles finished 13th out of 21 teams.
The women’s cross-country team had five runners with senior Emma Roberts leading the Eagles with a 17th overall out of 158 runners. As a team, Benedictine finished 16th overall.
Each one of the teams had two runners finish in the top 80 of runners.
Roberts enjoyed the meet and has liked the spirit her teammates have shown so far this year.
“Our coach Paul Zavala works hard to give us a college experience to remember, and part of that involves bringing us to new meets to keep things fresh and exciting. My favorite part of the meet was experiencing a competitive atmosphere amongst great runners from all three divisions. We are a tight group and this year will bring a lot of good memories for all of us,” said Roberts.
Garcia states the team still has a lot of work to accomplish their goal of top two at conference.
“We still have a lot of work to do to accomplish what we know we can as a team and keep the winning tradition. As a team, we are very young and we are all cool with each other” Said Garcia.
Both teams compete next weekend at Loyola University Chicago Lakefront Invite.
